This is an example for you if you are a collector of original clocks. This fancy-cased Victorian mantel clock was made by E. N. Welch Mfg. Co., of Forestville, Connecticut. This model is called the "Arditi" and features D. J. Gale's patent calendar mechanism. The case is 27.25 inches tall, 17 inches wide, and 5.75 inches deep. The walnut cabinet retains an original surface that has a dry crusty appearance. The finish appears to be untouched. The applied scrollwork designs are decorated with incised patterns. This example still retains its original three labels. All of which are in fine condition. The Clockmaker's labels are applied to the backboard. The directions for the Gale-designed calendar can be found pasted inside the case.

The two dials each measure 7 inches in diameter. Both are paper applied to tin pans and are in very good original condition. The upper dial displays the time of the day. The lower dial indicates the month, calendar date, and day of the week. D. J. Gale patented this perpetual calendar design in 1885. Because it is perpetual, it will automatically adjust for the variaition the lengths of the months and also adjust or track leap-year.

This eight-day movement is constructed in brass. It is spring powered and is a time-and-strike design. It strikes each hour on a wire gong mounted inside the case. This clock was made circa 1885.
