An unusual French Crystal Regulator inlaid with champleve. A. Stowell & Co. Boston. CCC-10.

This is a beautiful and fancy French Crystal Regulator. It was made in France circa 1900 and retailed by A. Stowell & Co. Boston.

The A. Stowell & Co. was one of Boston's premier Retailers specializing in jewelry, clocks, bronzes, silverware, and gold. It opened its Winter Street doors in 1822 stores.

The structure of this case is framed in brass. Most of the brass surfaces are exuberantly decorated with champleve. The primary color of this complex design is a light ocean blue. Green onyx is used as the top and base of the case. This onyx features a murid of veining. This is an interesting and natural detail and gives the illusion of depth. An urn is mounted at the top of the case. There are four separate shaped glass panels. Two of these function as access doors. The front door opens to allow one access to the dial. The back door allows one access to the pendulum and the French-made movement. The bottom of the case is fitted with six-turned brass feet.

The dial is brass and features painted Arabic hour numerals. The center field is fitted with an applied brass medallion. This clock is signed in this location by the Retailer. The hands are steel and skillfully made.

The Marti-made movement is brass and of excellent quality. It is designed to run eight full days and strike each hour on a wire gong mounted inside the case. This clock will also strike once at the half hour. The pendulum hangs from the back of the movement. It is also decorated in champleve. The motion of this pendulum can be seen from all sides of the case.

This large example measures 20 inches tall, 11 inches wide, and 7 inches deep.

Inventory number CCC-10.
