Elmer Stennes Pillar and Scroll. M.C.I.P. Made in 1970 and is number 26. 222052.

The classic Pillar and Scroll shelf clock form is a favorite among clock enthusiasts and antique collectors. Initially designed by the Terryville, Connecticut Clockmaker Eli Terry (1772-1852), this form was mass-produced in the United States in the 1820s. This contemporary example was made by Elmer Stennes. It was the 26th example made in 1970. More interestingly, it was made while he was incarcerated for the murder of his wife in the Massachusetts Correctional Institute Plymouth in Carver, Massachusetts. Please read Elmer's Bio.

This case is die-stamped in a couple of locations. The number "26" is located on the inside of the door on the bottom rail. It is also stamped on the bottom board inside the case. This baseboard location is also stamped "70" and "M.C.I.P."

This fine example is in excellent original condition. The wood, consisting of the feet, scrollwork, horns, and returns, are all original to this clock. The mahogany wood is nicely figured. The veneer selected for the crest is excellent and laid out in a book-matched fashion. The three final plinths are faced in maple, a light-colored wood. The result is a stark contrast between the light color and straight grain of the maple and the darker, richly grained mahogany. Each plinth is fitted with an urn-shaped brass finial. The front of the clock is fitted with a door. The lower section is decorated with a reverse painted tablet. This glass is original to this example and is in excellent original condition. The colors used are brilliant, and the subject matter reflects a traditional floral theme. The center is left open to view the brass-faced pendulum. The upper section of the door is fitted with clear glass. Through this, one can view the painted metal dial. Inside the case is a reproduction Eli Terry label. This is pasted to the backboard.

The dial is colorfully paint decorated. The four spandrels are decorated with floral patterns. These are framed with gilt work that is raised on gesso. The time ring is formatted with large Roman-style hour numerals and a dotted minute ring. The five-minute positions are designated with stars. In the center is an additional floral design. One should also note the fly that is painted outside the time ring in the 6:15 position. This is a Stennes detail. The hour and minute hands are a traditional form.

This spring-powered movement is German-made. It is signed “ERHARD JUACH / UHRENFABIK / GERMANY” on the backplate. The works are spring-powered and designed to run for eight days fully wound. It also features a strike train with a rack and snail striking system that will strike the appropriate hour on a wire rod mounted inside the case.

This fine clock was made in 1970 and stands approximately 30.25 inches tall, 17.25 inches wide and 4.5 inches deep. These dimensions allow it to fit on almost any mantel, a premier placement in most homes.

This clock is inventory number 222052.
