A French origin mantel clock. Brass case.

This attractive French mantel was made circa 1900. The case is constructed in brass and has been recently polished and protected with a thin lacquer finish. The lacquering helps to protect the finish from tarnishing.

The case sits up on four thin pad feet. The bracket base provides a secure foundation. A nicely shaped rose brass molding smoothes the transition from the base up into the main body of the case. This molding is inscribed and is two tone in color. The portico at the top of the case is supported with large corinthian capped columns. These are fully turned and stop fluted and flank the center section which is set into a beveled frame. The dial is porcelain and is colorfully decorated with birds and flowers. The Arabic style hour numerals are set into individual white cartouches. These separate themselves from the mauve colored fleld of the dial. The hands are brass and are a tradition design for the period. Two additional porcelian panels are located above the dial. These are also colorfully decorated. The top of the clock is fitted with a shallow dome. The front of which features a decorative two tone casting. The primary feature is a bearded man which is cast into the brass. The casting is nicely detailed. His face is treated with silver wash.

The movement is brass and is very good quality. It is spring powered and designed to run eight days on a full wind and to strike each hour on the hour on a gong which is mounted inside the case. This clock also strikes once on the half hour.

This shelf clock case measures approximately 14.75 inches tall, 9.5 inches wide and 7.25 inches deep.
