Gilbert Octagon Drop Calendar Clock. The Consort. 221174.

The Gilbert Manufacturing Company in Winsted, Connecticut, made this simple calendar clock. This model is called the Consort and was featured in Gilbert's 1910 catalog.

This attractive long drop schoolhouse case is constructed in oak. The molding details are very nice. It features a pressed design finished in black as a center band. The black contrasts nicely with the tinted honey finish, applied to the reddish oak case wood. The paper dial is applied to a tin pan. This dial is in very good original condition. The Maker's trademark is located in the center, just above the winding square. The time is displayed with large Roman-style hour numerals. The closed-minute ring features triangles at each five-minute locations. Arabic numerals are used for the calendar day. These are displayed in an upright or tumbled fashion. Printed at the bottom of the dial is the wording, "MADE BY THE WM L. GILBERT CLOCK CO., WINSTEAD, CONN., U.S.A." This clock uses three hands to display the time and calendar date. The two black hands are a pair, and they display the time. The single long thin red hand indicates the calendar date. All of this is protected behind glass fitted into a brass bezel. The lower door is also fitted with glass. "REGULATOR" is painted on this from the back. The brass-faced pendulum bob can be viewed through the glass in the door.

The time-only movement is brass and is designed to run for eight days on a full wind. It is spring powered. When these movements are properly serviced, they provide years of use.

This clock is approximately 31 inches long with a 12-inch diameter dial. This clock was made circa 1910.
