Jeromes & Darrow of Bristol, Connecticut. "Reeded Pilaster & Scroll." MM12

This is an outstanding example of a "Reeded Pilaster & Scroll" shelf clock made by Jeromes & Darrow of Bristol, Connecticut, circa 1828 - 1833.

The firm of Jeromes & Darrow was comprised of Chauncey Jerome, Elijah Darrow, and Noble Jerome. It was located on Main Street near the Requabuck River. This firm occupied buildings on both sides of the street. Chauncey Jerome provided the cases. Noble Jerome was to provide the movements. Elijah Darrow provided the painted tablets.

Inside this mahogany case is the Clockmaker's label, which reads "Improved / CLOCKS, / MMADE AND SOLD / BY / JEROMES & DARROW / BRISTOL CONNECTICUT." This label is pasted onto the backboard. The movement is a "Groaner" style arrangement. It is weight driven and is constructed with wooden gears. It is designed to run for approximately 30 hours on a full wind. It will also strike each hour on a cast iron bell mounted above the case behind the scroll work or gallery. This movement design was thought to have been made sometime around 1825. The case is veneered with mahogany and retains an older finish. The front of the case is fitted with a large door. This opens to access the dial, cast iron drive weights, pendulum, and movement. This door is divided into three sections. The lower tablet is original to this clock. It is colorfully decorated with floral patterns and is in good original condition. The predominant theme is four large roses. The middle section also displays a reverse-painted tablet. This features a geometric-designed border. This frames a pastoral scene that depicts a large white building set in the countryside. This tablet does have some small areas of loss, which should be evident. It is also cracked in the lower left corner. This is difficult to see. Both tablets are original to this clock. The upper section is fitted with glass. Through this, one can view the dial. This dial is wood and is paint decorated. The designs in the corners are raised in gesso and highlighted with gilt work. The time ring features Roman formatted numerals. The top of the case is surmounted with scroll work. This is original to this clock.

This case stands approximately 38 inches tall. It is in excellent overall condition.
