This is a fine cherry case tall clock made by Kennedy Miller of Elizabeth Town, New Jersey circa 1800. Miller advertised on April 25th, 1803 as a “CLOCK-MAKER. AND GOLD & SILVER SMITH.”

This fine case is constructed in cherry and retains a lovely mellow patina. The color is excellent. The bonnet is a swans neck form having very high and delicate arches. These terminate with carved wooden pinwheel rosettes. Three turned wooden finials are mounted on top of finial plinths. The center finial is turned on a larger scale than the two found at the corners of the case. The arched bonnet door is flanked by smoothly turned bonnet columns. These are free standing. The door is fitted with glass. The waist section is long and narrow. It is fitted with a shaped waist door. The front corners of the waist are canted and terminate at each end in a lamb’s tongue molding. The base panel centers an applied panel. This is trimmed with a simple molded edge. The front corners of the base are also canted and share the same details found in the waist. This case stands on an applied bracket base. The feet are nicely formed and retain their original height.

The painted iron dial features colorful florals in each of the four spandrel areas. The lunette is also decorated with a number of floral themes. A colorfully painted bird is featured in the center. This dial is signed by the Maker. It also lists his working location. The time track is formatted with the combination of Roman and Arabic numerals. This dial also features five minute markers, subsidiary seconds and a day of the month calendar.

The movement is brass and designed to run eight days on a full wind. It strikes the hour on a bell that is mounted on a stand above the movement. The strike is actuated by a count wheel striking system that is mounted on the strike side winding drum.

This clock was made circa 1800. It stands approximately 7 feet 10 inches tall.
