4.5-inch Commodore Chelsea clock, Base & Ball base. Special dial. Time only. It was retailed by Cross of Cross pens fame. 226067.
Chelsea called this case style the “Base and Ball.” The yellow brass case has been well cared for, and its surface has developed a soft, attractive tone over time. The serial number "21225" appears on both the bottom of the case and the backplate of the movement, confirming the clock was made around 1906.
The dial is about 4.5 inches wide and has the Special option. It features applied raised Arabic hour numerals and a painted closed minute ring. The retailer’s name, “Cross,” appears on the dial, with the rating adjustment just below.
The A. T. Cross Company, founded in 1846 in Providence, Rhode Island, is one of America’s oldest pen makers.
The clock has a high-quality, spring-wound movement that runs for eight days. Its escapement uses a balance wheel, allowing it to keep time even if the clock is moved or placed on an uneven surface. The movement’s plates are circular, and the back plate is die-stamped with company details.

The Chelsea Clock Company Board of Directors met for the first time on July 28, 1897. The Board consisted of Whipple N. Potter, Jr., President, Charles H. Pearson, Treasurer, Reginald Foster, Clerk and Secretary. Allen L. Shepherd served on the Board with the elected officers. This first group of individuals was not together long. The Chelsea firm persevered and has enjoyed a long run of success as a result of making clocks of superior manufacture. This company made many clocks. Some of which were in the style of the Willard timepiece or banjo clock, the E. Howard Model No., 70 and more famously, marine clocks. This company remains in business today.
