Ansonia Brass & Copper Co. The "Drop Extra Calendar." 218110.

This Ansonia wall clock is called the "Drop Extra Calendar." The case is veneered in rosewood and exhibits excellent graining and color contrast. The clean shellac finish enhances this. The veneer is in very good condition. The two drop wooden turned finials on either side of the access door are original to the clock and are a decorative detail. The lower door has a reverse-painted tablet with a fancifully decorated gilt design. There is an aperture in the center of this design that allows one to view the motion of the brass bob when the clock is running.

The dial is original to the clock and is painted on tin. It has some areas of stress, adding to the overall character of this example. The signature on the dial is untouched. It reads, "TERRY'S PATENT / MANUFACTURED BY THE / ANSONIA BRASS & COPPER Co. / ANSONIA, / CONN." The time ring features Roman-style hour numerals. The outer Arabic numbers, one to thirty-one, indicate the calendar days of the month. The date of the month is singled out by the long decorative brass hand. The month of the year is displayed through a window below the hour numeral XII on the time ring.

The time and strike movement is brass and is designed to run for eight days on a full wind. It is powered by two coil springs. This clock strikes the hour on the hour, on a wire gong.

The Ansonia Brass & Copper Co. label is pasted on the inside of the case onto the backboard. It can be viewed when one opens the lower door.

This clock was made circa 1880.

Its dimensions are 26 inches long and feature a 12-inch dial pan.
