An Ansonia Clock Co. "Bee tin" in original yellow. Country store collectible. 223249.
The Ansonia clock made a series of one-day clocks that were packaged first in wooden boxes and then later in tin cans. These cans are decorated in a number of colors, including red, yellow, blue, salmon, brown, and variations of them. They also feature printed graphics with images of the factory, bees, and instructions. These have been popular with clock collectors, general store items, and advertising. Collectors actively seek these tins out. Clocks found in their original tins are fun to find.
The clocks the tins were designed to protect are spring-powered and designed to run one day fully wound. The Bee models uses the rear cover of the clock case as a combination winding key, mainspring barrel, and ratchet wheel. You wind the clock by rotating the back. Their small size, measuring approximately 3 inches in height, made them handy to travel with. The cases were most often nickeled. The glass in front is beveled. Dial formats can vary. Most are paper and retain the Ansonia trademark. A few are decorated with applied embellishments. They also offered this clock with an alarm option where the bell is mounted and displayed on the top of the case.
This yellow tin is in good original condition. The red printing contrasts nicely with the background color.
