A beautiful rocking ship tall case clock of Boston origin. This Federal-era example boasts mahogany construction, superb proportions, exquisite inlay work, and warm, lustrous tones. 225005.

The clock stands proudly on shapely ogee bracket feet with a double-step molding above. Its base is decorated with intricate inlays, including fine stringing, delicate quarter fans, and a striking central urn bursting with floral motifs. The long, narrow waist is fitted with inset brass stop-fluted quarter columns, finely cast brass capitals, and a tombstone-shaped waist door with elegant string inlay.

The bonnet features an elaborate pierced fretwork crest. Ball-and-spire brass finials crown the three plinths. Fluted brass stopped hood columns rise to support the molded arch. The arched bonnet door and plinths are delicately inlaid, harmonizing with the rest of the case's refined decoration.

The painted iron dial is a visual and mechanical delight. In the arch, a fully automated rocking ship—flying the American flag—moves gently with each pendulum swing, offering a charming maritime motif. The spandrels are richly decorated with floral designs, and the dial is fitted with rare pierced diamond hands featuring unusual open circular bases. A wheeled calendar tracks the date.

Behind its stunning façade lies an equally impressive movement. The eight-day, weight-driven mechanism operates on a time-and-strike system with a rack and snail striking method, ensuring accuracy and reliability. A cast iron bell, mounted above the movement, produces a deep, resonant chime to mark the passing hours.

This clock is a superb example of early American horology— a work of art representing Boston's finest craftsmanship at the turn of the 19th century. It was made circa 1795.

This fine cabinet stands 7 feet 11.75 inches tall. The bonnet is 19 inches wide and 10 inches deep.
