Brewster & Ingrahams of Bristol, Connecticut. U.S. 8-day Steeple Clock. Time, Strike, and Alarm. 222129.

This is an excellent and very collectible example of a steeple or "Sharp Gothic" mantel clock. It was made by the Brewster & Ingrahams Clock Company of Bristol, Connecticut. 

The case is constructed in mahogany, mahogany veneers, and white pine. The shellac finish has been nicely cleaned, highlighting the figure and quality of the wood. The two wooden finials are tapered to a fine point. The tips of these cones are in good condition. They are often broken. The cones exhibit minor losses at the points. Both finials are mounted to the top sides of the case on top of rectangular-shaped blocks. The front of the clock is fitted with a door that conforms to the gothic shape of the case. The lower section features a frosted glass with a floral decoration cut from the back. This allows one to see the motion of the brass-faced pendulum as it swings behind the glass. This has a nice effect. The upper section of this door is fitted with clear glass. Through this, one can view the clock dial. 

This zinc dial is painted. The time ring is formatted as a close minute ring and Roman-style hour numerals. The hole in the center provides room for the brass alarm disk. The hands are steel and are original to this clock.

The 8-day time and strike movement is constructed in brass and features ribbed plates. The front plate is die-stamped with the Manufacturer's name. All of the gearing is brass, and the pinions are steel. Each train is powered by a coil spring. The escapement is a recoil. The strike is actuated by a count-wheel striking system located between the plates. It is designed to strike each hour on a wire gong which is mounted to the backboard inside the case. Also, inside the case is the alarm movement. This spring-powered movement is mounted at the bottom and is wound when needed. One sets the alarm by adjusting the brass disk in the center of the clock dial. The alarm hammer strikes a bell mounted inside the case. 

The Clockmaker's label can be found inside the case, pasted to the backboard. It is in excellent original condition. It reads, "PATENT SPRING, EIGHT-DAY / Brass Clocks, / MADE AND SOLD BY / BREWSTER & INGRAHAMS, / BRISTOL, CONN." 

This clock was made circa 1845 and stands approximately 20 inches tall, 9.75 inches wide, and 4.25 inches deep.
