A cherry case tall clock of New England origin. This pleasing example was most likely made in Eastern Connecticut. Inventory No. 26195.

This case is nicely proportioned. The proportions should be familiar to those that covet New England tall clocks. This fine example features a very popular form. The case is constructed primarily in cherry and features a New England white pine backboard. This example retains an older finish and the tone of the wood exhibits a warm color. The case stands on applied bracket feet that are part of a double stepped molding. The waist door is shaped at the top and trimmed along the perimeter with a simple molded edge. This door fills the waist section of the case. Open it and one can easily access the weights and brass faced pendulum bob. The bonnet is fitted with a wonderful version of a New England fret form. This decoration includes three tall fluted finial plinths that each support a brass ball and spiked finial. The bonnet columns are turned and also decorated with a fluted detail. They are mounted in brass capitals. These columns visually support the molded arch molding. The bonnet door is also arched and fitted with glass. It opens to a colorfully painted iron dial.

This colorfully painted dial is decorated with florals. The time track features large Roman numeral hour markers. The five minute markers are painted in an Arabic form. A subsidiary seconds dial and month calendar can be found in their traditional locations inside the time ring. The time is indicated by lovely formed steel hands. They are very graceful.

This fine movement is constructed in brass and is good quality. Four turned cigar shaped brass pillars support the two brass plates. Hardened steel shafts support the polished steel pinions and brass gearing. The winding drums are grooved to accept and guide the weight cord. Each holds approximately eight days of winding cord. The escapement is a recoil format. The movement is weight driven and designed to run eight days on a full wind. It is a two train or a time and strike design having a rack and snail striking system. As a result, it will strike each hour on the hour. This is done on a cast iron bell which is mounted above the movement on a bell stand.

This clock was made circa 1810. This clock is inventory number 26195.

The case and stands a modest 7 feet 4.5 inches tall to the top of the center finial. It is approximately 20 inches wide and 10 inches deep.
