Delft-style china clock case with a Waterbury 8-day gong strike movement. A smaller size. 223173.
This attractive porcelain mantel clock features an earthenware ceramic case with a blue and white Delft design in the Dutch tradition. The prominent scene depicts two sailboats moving upriver, with birds in the sky and a windmill on the horizon. Floral motifs adorn the top and sides. The back of the case is signed in the glaze, “MADE IN FRANCE.” A shell motif is located above the dial, and there are a few small areas of wear on the glaze.
The bezel and dial sash are brass. The sash is decoratively detailed, and the bezel is fitted with glass with a beveled outside edge. Through this, one can view the porcelain dial, which measures 3.25 inches across and has an Arabic hour numeral time ring. A brass cartouche is located in the center of the dial.
The brass movement, made by the renowned Waterbury Clock Company in Waterbury, Conn, USA, is a testament to quality. The backplate proudly bears their mark. This movement is designed to run eight days on a full wind, striking each hour on the hour on a wire gong and striking once on each half hour, ensuring accurate timekeeping and reliable performance.
