Dent London. A small English made desk or mantel clock. XX-19.
This English-made mantel clock is quite charming. The presentation suggests a clock of high quality.
The case is finished in black lacquer and measures just under 10.5 inches tall, 6.75 inches wide, and 5.5 inches deep. The case sits on four turned feet. The base molding steps in as it moves upwards. The corners are fitted with swan's neck-shaped molding. It smoothly transitions into a canted surface and a lamb's tongue molding. The top of the case features a modified pagoda pediment. Please note the applied molding and carved details. Very nice. The two side panels frame thick beveled glass. These allow good visual access to the interior of the mechanism. Both front and back doors are also fitted with beveled glass. The front door accesses the domed-shaped dial.
This dial is brass, and the details are engraved into it. This includes the time ring, Maker's name "DENT," number "817," and working location "London." These details are presented in black. The surface of the dial is treated with a silver wash for contrast. The closed minute time ring measures approximately 3.25 inches in diameter. Both the hour and minute hands are finely made. The lockable back door opens to access the movement and pendulum.
The movement features heavy brass plates which are held together with five posts. The back plate is also engraved "London." The time-only movement is powered by a coil spring and transfers its power to the movement through a fusee. It is designed to run for eight days. The escapement is an anchor recoil design. It is of excellent quality. The pendulum is suspended by a "T-Bridge."
This clock was made circa 1850.
