This wooden cabinet is constructed in oak and has been refinished to a complementary honey-brown tone. The cabinet is elevated on four applied pad feet. The wooden base molding transitions to a double row of brickwork. The front corners of the main cabinet are fitted with flat-fluted columns on each side of the door. These terminate at the top in carved Corinthian capitals. The front door is rectangular-shaped and fitted with glass. The sides of this case are fitted with rectangular-shaped openings featuring hinged access doors. These feature lovely pierced wooden fret designs backed with silk. This material serves several purposes. First, it provides dust production for the works. Furthermore, it also allows the sound of the bells and gongs, when struck inside the case, to escape more easily than if these windows were solid wood. The rear door is quite large. The opening in the door is fitted with a brass screen that is pierced. The top of the case features an architectural-shaped pediment. The facade is decorated with floral carved detail. Three rows of the brickwork detail are positioned below this.
This fusee-powered "Victorian Chimer" is a three-train design. It is designed to strike the hours and quarter hours. One can have this clock strike on a nest of eight graduated bells mounted above the works or on four wire-coiled gongs mounted behind the movement. The gong selection plays the Westminster chiming sequence. This tune was made famous by the Act of Parliament clocks, BIG BEN, in London. One also has the option of having it strike an eight-bell sequence. Both tunes are progressive. The works are heavily constructed and designed to run for eight days on a full wind. Two large plates are supported by traditionally shaped brass pillars or posts. The gearing is brass, and the pinions are steel. The movement is spring-driven and incorporates a fusee cone in each train, so the power is equalized throughout the run. This movement features a rack and snail striking system. A pull repeat cord is threaded through the left side of the case. This movement is of excellent quality.
The dial is brass and is constructed from a brass sheet fitted with several decorative elements. The cast brass spandrels feature floral designs and winged cherubs. These are applied to the dial and frame the time ring. This time ring has been finished in a silver wash. The time ring is formatted with Arabic-style five-minute markers separated from the large Roman-style hour numerals by a closed minute ring. The inside surface area of the time ring has been textured. This design contrasts the dial and the black steel hour and minute hands. Additional spandrels are located in the arch of the dial. These are also used to frame the two other silver rings situated there. The one on the left is the rate adjustment for the movement. To the right of this is the tune selector. The choices are WESTMINSTER CHIMES or CHIME ON EIGHTS BELLS.
This clock measures a full 21 inches tall to the top of the central finial. In addition, this clock is 9.25 inches wide and 15.5 inches deep at the feet. This fine example was made circa 1890.
