An English Time & Strike Bracket Clock signed "Ellicott & Smith, Royal Exchange, LONDON." 225018.

This gadrooned-top bracket clock is cased in a wonderfully figured rosewood veneer and retains a dark finish. Four fan-carved wooden pad feet are applied to the bottom of the case. The base molding is carved with an interesting design. Carved moldings adorn the top of the case, and the quarter radiants are applied to the front door. The gadrooned-top of the case is fitted with five wooden ball finials, a unique feature that sets this clock apart. The front door is equipped with glass, and the interior edge is trimmed with a brass beveled edge finished in gilding. The brass dial is engraved. It is signed by the Clockmaker "Ellicott & Smith" in script lettering. The working location of "Royal Exchange, LONDON" is also listed in this location. The time track numerals are Roman-style and positioned inside the closed minute ring. Two dials are arranged in the arch. On the left is a Silent / Strike actuator. The hand allows one to turn the striking portion of the clock on or off by moving the indicator hand to the desired position. To the right of this is a rate adjustment. You can speed the clock up by turning the hand to the right. If you turn it to the left, the clock will slow down. The steel hands are nicely formed. This case's sides feature large opens fitted with fish scale pierced brass screens backed by a red cloth. At the back of the clock, one will find a large door. This is equipped with clear glass and opens to access the pendulum and movement.

The movement is a two-train fusee-powered design. It is of excellent quality having knobbed pillars that support heavy brass plates. The transfer of power from the large coil springs to the fusee cones is done so with a brass cord. The hour is struck on a bell mounted above the movement. This example also features a pull repeat cord on the right side of the case. The escapement is of the anchor variety. The back plate is engraved with the Clockmaker's name,

In Brian Loomes' book Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World is Ellicott & Smith, who worked at Royal Exchange, London, from 1830 through 1840.
