A fine French figural gilded shelf clock, circa 1820. XXSL-85.
This wonderful sculptural clock is cast in bronze and retains most of its original fire gilding. This remains in excellent condition because the clock is protected under a glass dome. This glass dome fits tightly on its line inlaid and ebonized wooden base. This protects from dust and discourages people from handling the clock case. As a result, the clock has a fine color. Both components appear to be original accessories to this fine clock. The detailed figural form depicts a 15-16th century nobleman. He is posed in a peaceful allegory. He is depicted with his hands off his sword hilt, and he has set aside the articles of war and office. Below is an elaborately scrolled frieze with a bust of a female noblewoman at its center. This is likely the depiction of King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella of Spain. A console form pediment rests on the top and houses a French time and strike movement. This movement is fitted with a silk suspension, and the time is displayed on an enamel dial. It is in excellent running condition. The clock case rests on a detailed Rococo base with scrolled feet and an elaborate apron.
