A fine mahogany case tall clock with break arch bonnet and brass dial signed Edwd Maud, London. 213127.

Edward Maud(e) is listed in Brian Loomes’ “Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World” as working in London from 1784 through 1795. He is also listed in Dennis Moore’s The British Clockmakers & Watchmakers Apprentice Records 1710 -1810. Here Maud is listed as a Master, and he trained William Tomkins.

This is a very impressive and masculine-looking clock. This case exhibits lovely figured mahogany wood selections throughout its construction. The mahogany color is rich and warm. The base is supported on a nicely formed double-stepped bracket molding. The apron is fancifully shaped. A figured panel is applied to the base. This is framed with applied molding and is complicated with relief corners. The waist section is long and narrow. It is flanked by brass stop-fluted quarter columns that terminate in brass quarter capitals. The waist door is a modified tombstone form and is also trimmed with applied molding. Through this door, one can access the brass-covered lead weights and brass-covered pendulum bob. The bonnet or hood is a break arch form. Fluted plinths and scrolled blind frets separate the double molding design. Brass stop fluted bonnet columns are mounted in brass Doric-shaped capitals, and they flank the arched formed bonnet door. This opens to access the dial.

This sheet brass dial is finished with a silver wash. It features an engraved chapter ring, subsidiary seconds dial, and a calendar aperture. This dial is signed in the arch by the Maker.

The two-train movement weight-driven movement is constructed in brass. It is designed to run for an eight-day duration and is of excellent quality. It will strike the hour on the hour on a cast iron bell that is mounted above the movement.

This clock was made circa 1785 and stands approximately 7 feet 6 inches tall.

It is inventory number 213137.
