A French-origin Crystal Regulator in a special case featuring a matted front and a portrait of a woman. CCC-8.

This beautiful crystal regulator or four-glass clock was made in France circa 1890. The brass framing is decorated in a manner seldom seen in this form. The case features fluted verticle columns, the upper and lower pediments are configured with multiple steps, and applied banding.

This example is elevated on four brass feet. The four separate beveled-edged glass panels are fitted in brass frames. There are two access doors. The front door opens to allow one access to the dial. The back door allows one access to the pendulum and the French-made movement. All polished brass surfaces are protected with a light lacquer finish.

The front of the clock features a matted brass framing. The enamel clock dial is fitted in the upper circular opening. This dial features unusual formatting. A purple band frames the perimeter. Gold stars and dotted minutes are painted on the band and represent the time ring. Painted purple Arabic hour numbers presented in a tumbled fashion are positioned just inside this ring. Fancy brass-formed hands indicate the time. Below the dial is a portrait of a beautiful woman on enamel. The artwork and the colors are excellent. The figure has a three-dimensional quality about her. She appears to be leaning out of the background.

The movement is brass and is of excellent quality. It is spring-powered and designed to run eight days once fully wound and strike each hour on the hour on a coil gong mounted behind the movement. This clock also strikes once each half hour. The plates are circular. The back plate of the movement features several die-stamps. These include “MADE IN FRANCE” and the “Japy Freres....” stamp.

This clock measures approximately 12 inches tall, 7.75 inches wide, and 5.5 inches deep.
