French Origin, Four Glass Clock.

RR-30 A Crystal Regulator or Four Glass clock of French origin .

This attractive French Crystal Regulator was made circa 1900. This example is fancier than most and measures approximately 13 inches tall, 8.5 inches wide and 6 inches deep. The case is constructed in brass and has been recently polished and protected with a thin lacquer finish. The lacquering helps to protect the finish from tarnishing. All four sides of this case are fitted with glass panels that feature beveled edges. The front and back glass panels are doors. They provide access to the dial and movement. The movement, stamped “Japy Freres,” is very good quality. It is spring powered and designed to run eight days on a full wind and to strike each hour on the hour on a gong which is mounted to the back of the movement. This clock also strikes once on the half hour. The pendulum is the traditional format of two glass vials supported in a brass frame. The dial is porcelain and features a time ring formatted with large Arabic hour numerals. A Boston retailer’s name is faintly inscribed. The hands and brass bezel are decoratively designed.
