H. Scott of Lauder, Scotland. An automated dial (Shuttlecock) tall clock.
This wonderful inlaid clock case exhibits excellent narrow proportions and first rate wood selections through out its design and construction. This is evident in the exhibition of wonderful sweeping grain patterns found throughout this case design.
This beautiful clock case stands on applied bracket feet. The base panel features a wonderful figured crotch mahogany panel that is framed with decorative satin wood inlay. The waist is long and narrow centering a long waist door that has a nicely shaped at the top. The door is well figured and is also inlaid. The lower interior corners of this framing are fitted with inlaid quarter fans. Additional fans are positioned in the upper section of the waist frame. Fancy horizontal inlays are located across the top of the waist and below the fluted quarter columns. These columns terminate in turned wooden quarter capitals. The inlaid bonnet is a swan's neck pediment form. Brass rosettes are applied to the nicely shaped arches. This visually centers an intricately inlaid finial plinth which supports a large brass finial. Blind frets are inserted in the tympanum of the hood. The bonnet door is arched and fitted with glass. Fully turned and fluted bonnet columns ending in brass capitals are positioned on either side of the door.
The colorfully painted dial features a Roman numeral chapter ring, seconds ring and calendar. The four spandrels locations are decorated with floral themes. In the arch is a scene of a man and a woman playing shuttlecock or battledore. The shuttle is attached to the verge and moves in a side to side motion with the pendulum. Automated dials are always desirable. The most common examples found features rocking ships or Father Time. This is not a common scene and it is quite charming. This clock is signed by the Maker in the center section of the dial along with his working location. The village of Lauder is located south east of Edinburgh.
The two train movement weight driven movement is constructed in brass. It is designed to run for an eight-day duration and is excellent quality. It will strike the hour on the hour on a cast iron bell that is mounted above the movement.
This clock stands approximately 91 inches or 7 feet 7 inches tall to the top of the center finial. Measured at the upper hood molding, this clock is 20 inches wide and 10 inches deep.
