Heman Clark of Plymouth, Connecticut Pillar and Scroll mantel clock. ZZ-67.
This is a very good example of a brass-geared Pillar & Scroll shelf clock with a painted and signed dial that reads, "H Clark / Plymouth."
This rare example is in excellent condition. The wood, consisting of the feet, scrollwork, horns, and returns, are all original to this clock. The finish appears to be original to the clock and has been carefully waxed. It is in beautiful condition. The front of the clock is fitted with a door. The lower section is decorated with a reverse-painted tablet. This glass is original to this example and is in excellent original condition. The colors are excellent. The scene depicts a traditional CT shelf clock theme. Typically, a large home is set in a landscape with a clean yard, A large tree or two in the foreground, and a tree line off in the distance. The upper section of the door is fitted with clear glass. Through this, one can view the painted iron dial.
This dial was manufactured in Boston by the Nolen & Curtis dial firm. The four spandrel areas are decorated with colorful urns. These are framed with raised gesso work that is painted in gold. Gold rings frame the two sides of the time ring. The minute ring is closed. Roman-style numerals demark the hours. A subsidiary seconds dial is included in the time display. This dial is signed. This signature reads, "H Clark / Plymouth." Behind the dial is the brass works.
The movement plates have been skeletonized, as is the custom of most Salem Bridge clock movements. It features a rack and snail striking system, striking the hour on the hour on a cast iron bell mounted inside the case. The weight-powered movement is a time-and-strike design and is in good condition. The weights are compounded and suspended from pulleys inside the case.
This clock was made circa 1818.
The dimensions of the case are slightly larger than your standard Pillar & Scroll clock. This case is approximately 35 inches tall. It is 4.5 inches deep and 17 inches wide.
This is an excellent example.
