A large French portico clock featuring brass inlays and accents. 219088

This four column portico case form was very popular in France. The vast majority of which featured black ebonized cases that were decorated with minimal brass accents. This example is more substantial than most. It measures approximately 22.5 inches tall, 11.5 inches wide and 6.5 inches deep. The case is constructed in mahogany and the use of brass as a decoration is extensive. This includes the gilt metal columns.

The bowed enameled dial is fit into a nicely detailed bezel. This dial measures approximately 4.75 inches in diameter. It features Roman style hour numerals and a closed minute ring. Both Breguet style hands are blued steel. The dial is signed, "a Paris."

The 8 day brass movement features round plates and is spring powered. It is fitted with a pinwheel escapement. It strikes the hours and half hours on a bell. The escapement and the count wheel are mounted on the backplate. The heavy gridiron temperature compensating pendulum features a large gilt bob. The pendulum is now suspended on a hook connected to a suspension spring. This movement is excellent quality.
