A Louis XVI Style French Lyre Clock retailed by Bigelow, Kennard & Co. Inc. CCC-9.
This is an early 20th-century lyre form Mystery Clock. The lyre-shaped case is ceramic and is finished in a deep cobalt blue glaze. This model was originally made in multiple colors. I have seen similarly shaped cases finished in shades of red, pink, and white. The cobalt blue examples are the most desirable and attractive. The case is raised on four adjustable feet. A shaped pedestal supports the lyre form. All of this is adorned with classical gilt ornaments, including ropes and garlands, and at the top is Helios' mask above a floral festoon. The complex grid-iron pendulum is mounted on a knife edge at the top of the case. Seven rods alternating of steel and brass support the ring-shaped bob that frames the dial bezel. The ring features 54 brilliant stones. Imagine, if you will, the entire pendulum, rods, and ring moving in a side-to-side motion when the clock is running. This motion commands one's attention. The convex-shaped glass has a beveled edge and is secure in the brass bezel. This protects the white enamel dial and the lyre-shaped brass hands. This dial is signed by the original Retailer, Bigelow, Kennard & Co. Inc., / BOSTON. The time ring is formatted with Arabic-style hour numerals, a dotted minute ring, and red Arabic quarter hour makers. The two-train "France" mark movement runs eight days. It is spring wound striking the hour and each half hour on a bell mounted behind the good quality movement.
Case dimensions in inches: 19.5 tall, 8 wide, 4.5 deep.
