Masonic themed Fusee powered Skeleton Clock. Mantel clock. 214059.
This very interesting skeleton clock is finely made. The brass plates or the primary frames are shaped like the Masonic symbol of the Square and Compass. The square is an emblem of virtue, and we must square our actions by the square of virtue with all humankind. The Compass exemplifies our wisdom in shaping our desires and keeping our passions within bounds. These plates are secured to a wooden base that supports the clock’s original glass dome. Please note that the glass dome is tricky to photograph. It casts many reflections into the lens of the camera. Red velvet cloth is laid under the four mounting caps that support this brass frame. The framing supports the 8-day brass-constructed spring-powered movement. This movement incorporates a fusee cone that somewhat equalizes the power of the coli spring through the time train over the run of the clock. The framing and gearing are formatted to allow one visual access to the interior workings. It features an anchor escapement and heavy brass bob. The dial is decoratively designed and features Roman hour numerals. It is also brass and has been treated with a traditional silver wash, contrasting with the movement’s brass gearing and framing. A passing strike is included in the movement format. This strikes one blow on the bell mounted above the movement at each hour.
This clock measures approximately 18 inches tall, 14.5 wide, and 7.75 inches deep.
It was made in the last quarter of the 19th century.
