Northrop & Smith Pillar & Scroll shelf clock originally made in Goshen, Connecticut. 218133.
This is a fine pillar and scroll clock made by Northrop & Smith of Goshen, Connecticut, circa 1825.
The Northrop & Smith firm was comprised of Herman Northrop and Benjamin F. Smith. They are listed in Clockmakers & Watchmakers of America By Name & By Place, written by Sonya, Thomas Spittler, and Chris Bailey. Their partnership was in force from 1831 through 1836. They made several clocks that featured wooden geared movements.
This is a good example. The case is constructed in mahogany and has been recently refinished. The wooden works’ 30-hour weight-driven movement is a time-and-strike design. It strikes each hour on a bell mounted inside the case. The Maker’s label is pasted onto the inside of the backboard. It is in good overall condition and reads, “PATENT / CLOCK, / MADE AND SOLD / BY / Northrop & Smith, / Goshen, Conn.“
This is a classic New England clock. It is designed to fit on the colonial mantle piece of the period. It measures approximately 28 inches tall, 17.5 inches wide, and 5 inches deep.
This example was made circa 1830.
