An oversized French-made crystal regulator featuring an exposed escapement and a Shamrock-themed case. 226080.

This case is oversized as compared to the majority of crystal regulators sold in the marketplace. This example is slightly taller than 17 inches. Its base measures approximately 10 inches wide and 7 inches deep. This is a very unusual crystal regulator.

The case is constructed of brass and has a soft, mellow patina. The base is unusual for the form: without individual feet, it rests flat on the surface. A broad, rounded-over base molding is its focal point as it transitions to the main body of the case. The framing is brass. On closer inspection, you will notice a row of shamrocks or clovers die-stamped in a linear vertical pattern. This may be a unique decoration. Four large beveled glass panels form the case sides. Two of these function as access doors. The front door opens to allow access to the dial. The back door allows access to the pendulum and the French-made movement. The side panels provide an interior view of the clock mechanism. Additional shaped moldings finish the top of the case.

The porcelain dial measures 5.25 inches in diameter. This is framed in a brass bezel. The outer enamel ring features Roman-style hour numerals. Blued-steel shaped hands indicate the time—the inner section of the dial steps in. Here, you will find the winding arbors framed with brass grommets. You will also note that this example features a visible Brocot escapement. This desirable feature lets you see the relationship between the jeweled pallets and the delicate escape wheel.

The Marti-made movement is brass and of excellent quality. It is spring-powered and designed to run for eight days once fully wound. It will also strike each hour and half hour on a wire gong mounted behind the movement. The backplate of the movement is stamped, "MADE IN FRANCE." It also has the 1889 Marti stamp.

Samuel Marti became one of France's most prolific movement manufacturers. His firms supplied clockmakers all around the world.

The pendulum is the traditional format, though larger than most. The two sealed glass vials are supported in a brass frame.

The clock was made circa 1890.
