The PSYCHE parlor mantel clock. William Gilbert Clock Company Winsted, CT. 223213.
This rare model is cataloged as the "PSYCHE ." It is one of Gilbert's fanciest and boldest shelf models. It oozes a Victorian feel.
The case is constructed of walnut, and the panels feature burl walnut veneers. The surface retains its original finish and compliments the dark chocolate brown coloring. This case form is decorated with numerous shaped moldings and applied carvings. These are enhanced with incised Eastlake-themed decorations. The arched top molding is surmounted by nicely detailed applied carvings. The middle section of the case features a large door fitted with glass. The glass is decorated from the back with delicate silver transfer. The floral-themed artwork features a bird. The design allows one to view the swinging pendulum.
The paper dial is original to the clock and is in very good condition. It measures 6 inches in diameter and is applied to a pan and trimmed with a nickel ring. The time ring is formatted with Roman-style hour numerals. Maltese-style hands point out the time.
Behind the dial, one will find a large brass eight-day movement. It strikes the hours, and the half-hours on a wire gong mounted to the back of the case. The front plate of the brass movement is die-stamped by the Maker. An alarm mechanism is also fitted inside the case. It is also powered by a coil spring and is set independently of the main movement. This would have been fitted to this clock at the time of manufacture at an additional charge. The alarm strikes on a cupped bell. The pendulum swings below the dial. It is designed with multiple rods. The bob features a brass bezel that supports a decorative piece of glass. The glass is cut from the back in a design that plays with the light that passes through it.
This case stands 24.5 tall, 15.5 inches wide, and 4.75 inches deep. It was cataloged by the Gilbert Clock Company in 1885.
