Seth Thomas Office Number 9 weight-driven wall clock. 221063.
This is an unusual clock. The Office Number 9 case was cataloged as having a spring-powered thirty-day movement. This example was most likely a special order since it is fitted with Seth Thomas's eight-day 77B weight movement that appears to be original to the case.
This traditionally formed Office 9 case is constructed in mahogany and retains its original finish. The front door is divided into two sections. The 12-inch painted dial is in wonderful original condition featuring Arabic hour numerals, a dotted minute ring, and a subsidiary seconds hand. Also included is the clockmaker's name along with "Made in U. S. A." The dial is trimmed with a brass bezel mounted on a wooden mask board. The four corners of the mask board have been decorated with painted images of a grapevine, grapes, and a leaf. This is very well done and should appeal to wine lovers around the world.
Seth Thomas's 77B built a solid reputation on the reliability of its performance. The weight-driven movement is of good quality. It features well-finished trapezoid-shaped brass plates, a Graham deadbeat escapement, and maintaining power. The movement is designed to beat eighty beats per minute and run for eight days between winding. The works are mounted to a large iron bracket attached to the backboard. This mounting bracket also supports the pendulum. The pendulum features a wooden rod that supports a large brass-faced zinc bob. This swings behind the brass-covered cylindrical weight. The movement is brass and of good quality.
This clock was made circa 1930.
