Tiffany & Co. Makers. New York. No. 475. Bracket or Chime clock with Joseph Lindauer's patented quarter-hour strike train. 222075.

The Tiffany & Co Makers clock division manufactured this large chime clock. It was one of two clocks completed on April 22, 1888. Both of which are recorded as Chime clocks and were ordered for stock. This example was completed under the direction of L. Stepanek at the cost of $153, which included both labor and materials.

The dome-top-shaped case is constructed in black walnut and retains its original finish. It is elevated on four cast brass feet that are decorated with floral themes. The leaf-decorated door frame is also cast in brass, and it is fitted with beveled glass. It locks closed with a key that slips through the decorative brass escutcheon. The sides of the case are formatted with dome-shaped windows that are fitted with brass sound frets. These are back in red silk. The silk allows the sound to escape the interior of the case while providing a barrier for dust. Above these side openings are hinged brass carrying handles. Freestanding Corinthian columns are positioned at the front corners of the case. Four brass finials adorn the top of the case.

The composite brass dial measures 6.75 inches across. The applied filigree consists of four corner pieces or cast spandrels and winged putti. A silvered Silent / Chime subdial is located in the arch of the dial. The chapter ring features incised dotted minutes and Arabic-style hour numerals. These are filled in with black wax. TIFFANY & CO – MAKERS" is signed between 5 and 7 o'clock. The dark black hour and minute hands clearly contrast against the subdued yellow brass dial and the silvered chapter ring.

This fine movement is constructed in brass and is of very good quality. Four turned pillars support the two large, heavy brass rectangular-shaped plates. Hardened steel shafts support the polished steel pinions, brass gearing, and Brocot escapement. Two large coil springs power the mechanism for 8-days. This is a quarter-hour striking mechanism striking a progressive Westminster chime on five coiled gongs. Joseph Lindauer patented this design, and his patent is noted on the backplate. It reads, "TIFFANY & CO MAKERS / PATENTED NOV. 7TH 1882." It is interesting to note that a quarter-striking clock usually requires three trains. Lindauer's design only uses two trains. The single-strike train strikes the hours and the quarter hours from the same power source. The striking is performed on a set of five wire coil-shaped gongs that are mounted inside the case. These are suspended from a bracket mounted inside the case. This clock strikes a progressive four gong sequence on the quarter hours and the hour on each hour. The quarter striking feature can be turned on or off by moving a lever located in the lunette of the dial. When this is turned to SILENT, this clock will strike each hour on the hour.

The pendulum is composed of a steel rod and a solid brass bob. The bob is also die-stamped with the Maker's information and Tiffany's order number.

This case has the following dimensions in inches: H: 20, W: 15 ½, D: 9.
