Unsigned cherry cased tall clock of New Hampshire origin. Grandfather clock. 27257.

Every country New England home needs a tall clock. This is a very good example of a cherry case tall clock made in the central New Hampshire.

This fine example is formatted in the traditional woods and proportions that one would expect from the Concord, New Hampshire, region. Many clockmakers from this region used cases that closely resemble this example. Makers such as the Hutchins Brothers and Timothy Chandler quickly come to mind.

This case stands elevated on cut-out bracket feet. These are scrolled out of the base panel and are separated visually from the base by applied molding. This molding is applied around the three finished sides of the base. The waist section is long and is fitted with a large rectangular-shaped waist door trimmed with a molded edge. Through this door, one can access the two tin can drive weights and the pendulum bob. The sides of the waist lack quarter columns. The bonnet can be easily described as a swan's neck form. This example is better shaped than most. The moldings are less heavily formed, and the arches have more vertical height than most of the typical Concord case styles. The horns terminate in finely carved pinwheel rosettes. The finial plinths mounted on the top of the hood support the three brass ball and spike finials. The bonnet columns are turned smooth and mounted into brass capitals. The bonnet door is an arched form and is fitted with glass. It opens to access the dial.

The iron dial is painted-decorated. It is not signed. The time ring features Arabic five-minute markers that are separated from the Arabic hour numerals by a dotted minute ring. This dial also displays the seconds on a subsidiary dial. The four spandrel areas are decorated with floral patterns. The floral theme is repeated and expanded in the lunette. Finely made steel-shaped hands display the time.

The movement is constructed in brass. It is designed to run for eight days once fully wound. It is weight driven. This clock strikes the hours on a cast iron bell mounted above the movement on an iron bell stand. Overall, it is good quality.

This clock stands approximately 7 feet 7 inches tall and was made circa 1805.
