An unsigned, inlaid mahogany tall clock of English origin. TT-174.
This is an attractive tall clock. The mahogany cabinetry exhibits wonderful wood selections throughout its construction. It is also decorated with several line inlay patterns that feature black accents. The modern shellac finish compliments the wood, giving the clock a warm and inviting tone. This case's high-quality cabinetry and fine proportions make it an easy choice to select for one's home.
This case stands on a cutout bracket base. The feet are slightly flared at the bottom, and a decorative drop apron is centered below the base section. The base panel is famed with an inlaid border. The inlay comprises two light wood lines framing a run of blackened rosewood. This pattern is also used in the design of the waist door and on the hood. The tombstone-shaped waist door provides access to the two drive weights and the pendulum. The front corners of the waist are canted, and this feature terminates in a simple lamb's tongue molding. This canted feature is decorated with an inlay. The bonnet is a swan’s neck form terminating in turned wooden rosettes. Three brass ball-and-spike finials are mounted on plinths at the top of the hood. An inlaid Fluer-dis-leif is inlaid in the center of thr tapyium. The bonnet columns are turned and nicely shaped. They are decorated with black rings, which tie into the case design. They are mounted in Doric brass capitals at the bottom. Corinthian brass capitals secure the tops. The bonnet door is arched and fitted with glass. It opens to a colorfully painted dial.
This is a colorfully painted decorated dial. A segmented time ring shows the hours in Roman-style numerals. The seconds dial and month date are displayed within the time track on subsidiary dials. Each of the four spandrel areas is decorated with floral themes. The lunette is decorated with a color band. The reds and greens attract one's attention. Below this is a potted flower. Fancy brass-formed hands display the time.
The movement is constructed in brass and is designed to run for eight days on a full wind. It is a time-and-strike format, striking the hour on a bell mounted above the works. It is of fine quality.
