An unsigned maple case tall clock of New Hampshire origin. Concord region. 27064.

This country case is unusually tall. The maple case measures 8 feet 1 inch tall. We see very few maple-cased clocks that stand over eight feet. The case is constructed primarily in maple and features a New England white pine backboard. This example has been refinished, and the current color of the wood exhibits a warm honey tone. The case stands on applied bracket feet. The waist door is rectangular shaped and trimmed with a simple molded edge. This door fills the waist section of the case. Open it, and one can easily access the weights and brass-faced pendulum bob. The bonnet is fitted with a traditional New England fret form. This pattern is called a whale’s tail design. This decoration includes three tall finial plinths that each support a brass ball and spiked finial. The bonnet columns are turned smooth and mounted in brass capitals. They visually support the arch molding. The bonnet door is also arched and fitted with glass. It opens to a colorfully painted iron dial.

This clock has a very attractive dial. The four spandrel areas are decorated with strawberries and floral themes. The spandrels are framed in a solid line border. A colorful red-breasted bird is painted on the arch. The time track features large Roman-style hour numerals. A dotted minute ring separates them from the Arabic five-minute markers. A subsidiary seconds dial and month calendar can be found in their traditional locations inside the time ring. The time is indicated by lovely formed steel hands.

This fine movement is constructed in brass and is of good quality. Four turned brass pillars support the two brass plates. Hardened steel shafts support the polished steel pinions and brass gearing. The winding drums are grooved to accept and guide the weight cord. Each holds approximately eight days of winding cord. The escapement is a recoil format. The movement is weight driven and designed to run for eight days on a full wind. It is a two-train or a time-and-strike design having a rack and snail striking system. As a result, it will strike each hour on the hour on a cast iron bell which is mounted above the movement on a bell stand.

This clock was made circa 1810.

The case stands an impressive 8 feet 1 inch tall, 20.25 inches wide, and 10.25 inches deep.
