Waterbury Clock Company. The "Regulator No. 60." 224012.

This regulator is a good option if you are looking for a big wall clock. Large clocks work well in large spaces. The rhythmic motion of the seconds beating gridiron pendulum produces a calming effect. Professions with waiting areas would do well to include a clock like this in their decorating schemes. Their presence projects a sense of quality and competence to one's profession. This impressive model measures approximately 79.5 inches long and 26 inches wide. Clearly, it was constructed to this scale to make a statement.

This outstanding example is in excellent original condition. The case is constructed in oak; much of it has been quarter-sawn and retains its original finish. All of the moldings and applied decorations are original to this example.

The porcelain dial is also in excellent condition. The hours are displayed in Roman-style numerals. A segmented minute ring features diamonds at the quarter hours and triangles at the other five-minute positions. The Clockmaking firm's name is printed below the time ring, "MANUFACTURED BY WATERBURY CLOCK CO. U.S.A." The hands are a Waterbury design. This dial also features a second-hand sweep.

The finely finished is weight-powered and designed to run for eight days before rewinding. Brass rectangular-shaped plates are supported by six posts that are secured with blued screws. Steel shafts support the brass gearing and pinions. The gearing design includes a deadbeat escapement, seconds beating, retaining power, and a sweep-second display. An iron box protects the works as a dust cover. The side access doors are hinged. The original gridiron pendulum is mounted on the front of the works. The gridiron pendulum was invented by the Clockmaker John Harrison sometime around 1726. This improved pendulum design features brass and iron rods arranged so that their different thermal expansions counteract one another. Hence, the length of the rod overall is constant. The brass bob is 13 inches in diameter. This example retains the Clockmaker's label, which is pasted inside the case.

This outstanding example was made circa 1900.
