William Lamport of Plymouth, England. English made Skeleton Clock. RR-18.
This very attractive skeleton clock under a dome features a silvered brass dial that is signed "W. H. Lamport / Plymouth." Lamport is listed in Brain Loomes's book, "Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World." Loomes lists William as working in Market Place in 1814. Lamport is also listed as a goldsmith and as a lottery agent. The city of Plymouth is located on the south coast of Devon, England, approximately 190 miles west-southwest of London.
This Skeleton clock is finely made. The plates are nicely formed and have been recently polished. These are mounted to a rosewood base that features excellent color. The top of the base is covered in green silk. The framing supports the time-only brass movement, which is fusee powered. It is designed to run for eight days on a full wind and features an anchor escapement. The movement is exposed, allowing one to view the internal workings. The brass dial is treated with a silver wash. It is decoratively designed and features Roman hour numerals. This example retains its original glass dome. The glass dome is very difficult to photograph. It casts many reflections into the lens of the camera. The dome provides protection for the clock.
This clock is approximately 17 inches tall to the top of the dome, 9.25 inches wide at the base, and 6.5 inches deep. This clock was made circa 1825.
Inventory number RR-18.
