Woodcock, London. A mahogany-cased bell top bracket clock with anchor escapement. 2211.
This is a London-made Bracket Clock that features an engraved brass dial that is signed "Woodcock / London."
This is a classic London form. The case is constructed in mahogany and features a deep rich color. The form features a bell top and decorative brass mounts. This case stands proudly on four cast brass bracket feet. They are nicely formed and applied to the bottom of the case. Both the front and back of this cabinet are fitted with doors that provide access to the dial and mechanism. The front door is also fitted with decorative cast brass corner spandrels backed in red silk. The red silk adds to the formal appearance of the cabinet. The decorative brass screens fitted on the case's sides are also backed in red silk. The purpose of these screens is to allow the sounds of the clock to more easily escape the cabinet.
The front door opens to access the arched dial. This dial is brass decorated with hand engravings. The four spandrels areas feature floral themes. The time ring is formatted with five-minute markers that are in Arabic form. They are separated from the Roman-style hour numerals by a closed minute ring. All engraved decoration is filled with black wax, and then the dial surface is treated with a silver wash. The silver wash adheres to the brass and not to the wax. This process creates a contrast in the details. The black steel hands also show up well against the silver background.
The door at the rear of the clock is fitted with glass allowing one to visually inspect the back of the movement and the pendulum. The heavy brass plates are fastened to the case by two brass L-shaped brackets. The movement is designed to run eight days fully wound and strikes each hour on a bell that is mounted above the works. It is powered by springs and features fusees. The pendulum has a steel rod and a brass bob and is suspended by steel suspension.
The dimensions are as follows: The height measured with the handle in the up position is 19.75 inches tall. Measured with the handle down, it is 18.5 inches tall. The width measured at the base or the feet is 10.75 inches. This clock is 7.5 inches deep at the feet as well.
This clock was made circa 1775.
