Enoch Hoyt Nutter worked as a clockmaker, watchmaker, silversmith, and jeweler. He was born in Rochester, New Hampshire, in 1801, the son of John and Hannah (Dennet) Nutter. He began his apprenticeship under James C. Cole of Rochester in about 1815. In 1824, he moved to Boston to work with Aaron Willard Jr. as a journeyman. In 1826, he was listed as working in Portland, Maine. There, he is credited with installing a public clock in Portland. Soon after, Dover, NH. On December 4, 1826, Enoch married Tabitha Mitchell, Gunnison (b.1802 d.1861). From 1826 through 1871, he is listed in several business directories, including the New England Union Business Directory, as working on Washington Street as E. H. Nutter & Co, silversmith, watchmaker, and jeweler. The Co included Oliver Tebbets. The Dover Directories 1871 lists him working with watches and jewelry in Washington Square.
