A Scottish inlaid mahogany tall clock narrow proportions. 212210.
This is a stunning inlaid mahogany case with long, narrow proportions, a testament to the intricate craftsmanship of its time. It stands on simply formed applied bracket feet. The base panel is crossbanded with mahogany along the outer edge. A thin satinwood line inlay frames this. The center selection of mahogany is excellent and features a rich grain pattern. The waist section is long and narrow. The sides of the case are fitted with turned waist columns. These are fluted and terminate in turned wooden capitals. The waist door is nicely shaped at the top. It also features an excellent mahogany grain pattern and is line inlaid with satinwood. The edges are trimmed with a simple molded edge. The bonnet is a swan's neck pediment form terminating with decorative brass rosettes. These center a single brass finial. The tympanum is fitted with tiger maple panels. The contrast of color is excellent. The fully turned and fluted bonnet columns are positioned on either side of the bonnet door. They are mounted in brass capitals. The glazed bonnet door is also arched and opens to a painted iron dial.
ThIs colorfully painted iron dial was manufactured in England by the Owen firm. It is fitted with a false plate and is signed at the top. Depicted in the arch of this dial is a full view of a woman walking down a country path with a lamb in her arms. The four spandrel areas are decorated with colorfully painted scenes. Each depicts a woman in each of the four seasons. Winter is illustrated in the lower left corner. Large Arabic numerals indicate the hours. The five-minute markers are also indicated in Arabic. Subsidiary seconds dial and a calendar dial are displayed in the traditional locations and indicated by separate hands.
The weight-driven eight-day movement is constructed in brass and is of good quality. Four-turned pillars support the two brass plates. Hardened steel shafts support the polished steel pinions, brass gearing, and recoil escapement. The winding drums are grooved. It is a two-train or a time-and-strike design with a rack-and-snail striking system. As a result, it will strike each hour on the hour on a cast iron bell mounted above the movement.
This clock stands approximately 7 feet 6 inches tall to the top of the brass finial.
