While bracket clocks are not rare by any means, Dutch examples like this one are a true find, making it a privilege to add such a unique piece to your collection.
This J. D. K. Vetter clock is a nice example exhibiting pleasing proportions. The mahogany veneer has been carefully chosen, accentuating the pleasing case form. The crotch veneer positioned in the case arch accentuates the form’s vertical lines. The case is elevated on four cast brass feet applied to the bottom molding. A carved molding, a subtle detail, is positioned above this and forms the transition to the main body. Gothic columns flank the sides and visually support the arch, which is capped with a plinth that transitions with additional carvings and fluting to a brass urn finial. Additional finials are mounted on the four corners of the case. Carrying handles are fitted to the sides of the case. In the center is an arched glazed door. The door provides access to the dial.
The composite brass dial features a painted border around the applied chapter or time ring. This paint decoration is very colorful and depicts a pastoral view. This dial is automated. While the clock strikes each hour, the windmill's blades are set in motion and rotate for the duration of this action. In addition, the fisherman seated in the foreground on the right raises and lowers his pole over a period of three minutes. Success: When the rod is raised, it reveals that a large fish is at the end of the line. He is a very successful fisherman who enjoys practicing catch and release. The engraved and silvered chapter ring displays the time as indicated by decorative blue steel hands. Roman-style hour numerals are separated from the five-minute Arabic markers by one of two closed-minute rings circumnavigating the chapter ring. The outer ring is formatted in the traditional Dutch style. Between the hours is a decorative engraving. The Maker’s name and working location are engraved along the lower edge of this chapter ring. The center section of this dial is matted and features skillfully engraved decorations. Beneath the hour numeral twelve, a square aperture that displays the calendar day. A lunar calendar display is located in the bottom half of the dial. The painted moon is set against a blue-painted sky illuminated by numerous painted stars.
The exceptional-quality brass time and strike movement is designed to run for eight days. Its Dutch design and striking format feature two separate bells. The rectangular plates that frame the movement are beautifully finished, and the four tuned pillars provide sturdy support. This clock is spring-powered and fitted with fusees, further enhancing its overall quality.
This clock measures approximately 29 inches tall,14 inches wide, and 9 inches deep. It is a substantial yet elegant addition to any collection.
