Wadsworths, Lounsbury & Turners. Litchfield, Connecticut clockmakers. A pillar and Scroll shelf clock. 218070.
This is a very good example of a Connecticut-made Pillar & Scroll clock. This fine example was made by the Firm of Wadsworths, Lounsbury & Turners in Litchfield, Connecticut. They are listed as being in business for only two years. This Firm was formed on April 5, 1827, by James C. & Amos Wadsworth, Martins Lounsbury, and the three Turner brothers - Allison, Titus, and Tertius W. Turner. Their newly erected shop was located by the South saw mill near South Bridge in the Northfield section of the town of Litchfield. They set out to produce pillar & scroll clocks having distinctive movements. On April 16, 1829, Lounsbury sold his interests, and the Firm was dissolved.
This is a very good example. The case is mahogany and retains a highly polished finish. The feet are original to the clock, as are the horns or scrollwork. The scrollwork supports three brass finials that appear original to this clock. The original dust caps are still in place. The front section of this form is fitted with a large door. It is divided into two sections. The lower section features a reverse-painted tablet that remains in very good original condition. The dial is colorfully paint-decorated on wood. It features gilt patterns and florals in the spandrel areas. It is original to the clock and untouched. The wooden works 30-hour weight-driven movement is a time-and-strike design and is in good condition. The Maker’s label is pasted onto the inside of the backboard. Overall this is a fine example of a Connecticut Pillar & Scroll clock.
