A French bracket or mantel clock with a red boulle facade inlaid with brass scrollwork. The enamel cartouche signed, "JUHEL / A VERSAILLES." The Maker engraves the back plate "Ourry / A Paris." YY-56.
This nicely decorated clock was made in Paris by "Ourry." The clock's case design and construction suggest it was made circa 1680. It is technically called a "Pendule Religieuse." The case is constructed of wood. Most surfaces have been decorated with boulle work inlaid with scrolling line brass inlays. Brass accent pieces decorate the edges and corners of the case. The case is elevated on four decorative flowers decorated with turned brass feet. The front of the case is fitted with a door that opens to access the dial. The glass is trimmed with a brass framework. The sides of the case are equipped with rectangular-shaped windows. The back is fitted with a door that allows one access to the movement and pendulum. Four decorative brass finials surmount the case.
The dial plate is brass. It is decorated with several engravings and applied brass floral castings. A minute ring is engraved around the perimeter of the hour ring. This outer band is engraved 1 to 60 in an Arabic form. Each hour has its white enamel cartouche. In blue, large Roman-style numerals depict the hours. The hour and minute hands feature a fancy design. They are blue steel and hand-filed. The Retailer signs the center of the dial. It reads, "JUHEL / A VERSAILLES." "Ourry / A Paris."
The rectangular-shaped movement features brass plates that are supported by five baluster-formed pillars. The gearing is brass, and the pinions are steel. This is a spring-powered clock, and the springs are fitted into the two large barrels. The escapement is a recoil design, and the pendulum swings at the back of the movement. It is suspended on a silk thread suspension. The strike train features a count wheel which is located on the back plate. The hours are struck on a bell mounted above the movement. The back plate is engraved with the Maker's name in large lettering, "Ourry / A Paris."
This case is approximately 19.25 inches tall, 10.25 inches wide, and 5 inches deep.
