Shreve, Crump & Low Boston. A French-origin Crystal Regulator in a decorative case of diminutive scale and a Japy Freres movement. 221179.
This cute Crystal Regulator or Four Glass Clock was made in France circa 1890. The case is framed in brass and is decorated with a cross-banded row of engravings. This is subtle detail and is very successful. Four separate glass panels feature beveled edges. Each of these is mounted in brass frames, making up the side of the case. There are two access doors. The front door opens to allow one access to the dial. The back door allows one access to the pendulum and the French-made movement. All of the polished brass surfaces have been protected with a light lacquer finish.
The Japy Freres movement is brass and is of very good quality. It is spring powered and designed to run eight days on a full wind and to strike each hour on the hour on a coil gong that is mounted at the back of the movement. This clock also strikes once each half hour. The movement's back plate features several die-stamps, including the Japy Freres die-stamp.
The enamel dial is framed in a decorative brass bezel. The enamel ring features a painted time ring. The minutes are dotted, and the hours are in Arabic. The Retailer's name is also signed here on the bottom. The interior of the dial is fitted with a cast brass floral disk. Fancy steel-formed hands indicate the time.
This clock measures approximately 10.5 inches tall, 6.25 inches wide, and 5 inches deep.
