A bench-made Grandmother Clock with a three-train German-made mechanism. 222005.
This is a decorative dwarf clock. The case was bench-made by a skilled cabinetmaker. The nicely proportioned mahogany case features line and quarter fan inlays. It is very well done.
The featured wood is mahogany, and it retains an older surface suggesting that this clock may be 50 years old. The case exhibits excellent proportions for this form, measuring 59.5 inches tall to the top of the center finial. It is 13.5 inches wide and just under 8 inches deep, measured at the upper hood molding. This case stands on four applied ogee bracket feet. They are nicely formed and are designed with a shapely knee and return. The base section features a thin light line inlay and quarter fans in each corner. This pattern is repeated in the design of the rectangular-shaped waist door. This door provides access to the interior of the case. The pendulum can be found in this space. This door is trimmed with a simple molded edge. The sides of the case are fitted with fluted quarter columns that end in cast brass quarter capitals. The hood features a typical New England-style pierced and open fretwork pattern. This is supported by three fluted plinths. Atop each plinth is a brass finial. Fluted bonnet columns that are free-standing flank the arched door. The door is fitted with glass and opens to allow access to the arched brass dial.
The clock is fitted with a three-train brass movement that was made in Germany circa 1910. This example is spring-powered and designed to run for eight days on a full wind. It strikes the hours and quarter hours on a set of Wire gongs. The quarter-hour sequence is the Westminster tune. This clock was made circa 1950.
This clock is currently shown in as found condition. It is sold fully serviced and in excellent working order.
