Silas Merriman Clockmaker and Silversmith New Haven, Connecticut.

Silas Merriman was born in Wallingford, CT on January 3, 1734. His parents were John Merriman (1691-1784) and Jemima (Wilcoxson) Merriman (1699-1764) of East Guildford, CT. It is not currently known to whom he trained. Penrose Hoopes speculated in his book Connecticut Clockmakers of the Eighteenth Century that he may have apprenticed under Macock Ward. He was also trained as a silversmith. Silas began in business about 1755, working in the Wallingford-Cheshire area. He married Hannah Upson on October 15, 1760, in Wallingford. They had two sons who became Silversmiths. Marcus (1762-1850) and Samuel (1771-1805). Silas most likely trained both boys. About 1766, The family moved to New Haven, where he had a shop on the east side of State Street. In October of 1779, Silas advertised in theĀ Connecticut Journal that he had watch crystals for sale at Phineas Bailey's shop. Silas died on May 8, 1805, in New Haven. He is buried in the City Burial Ground in New Haven, CT.
