The Fairhaven Clock Company Fairhaven, Vermont. Gallery clock. 223141.

The E. Howard Clock Company in Boston, Massachusetts, marketed several marble dial clocks in their catalogs. The earliest of these were made in the 1860s. These marble dial clocks were originally designed for and used in banks, halls, public buildings, hotels, railway depots, church galleries, and all large apartments. Marble was selected as a material and accepted by the public because of its distinctive look. The surface of these clocks is easy to keep clean and is very durable. Due to their success, it is only natural for competitors to offer similar models. The Fairhaven Clock Company (FCC) offered similar clocks in the 1890s. Due to the very short operational run of the Company, clocks made by this firm are difficult to locate.

This is one of FCC's larger models. It is listed in the Vermont Clock Company catalog as the “Style D.”

The front of this case is faced with slate measuring approximately one-half inch thick and approximately 39 inches long and 21 inches wide. The slate is finished in white. The stone features a nicely formed edge that is in very good condition. It is not cracked or chipped. The stone is mounted onto a pine-constructed case. The outer surface of this case was also painted white. The painted graphics on this example appear to be original to this example and are now in very good condition. This is a presentation clock. It was “PRESENTED / BY / The Ladies Guild / SEPT. 10 / 1894.” The dotted minute ring and hour numerals are bonze and applied to the slate. In the center field reads, “The Fairhaven Clock Co. / FAIRHAVEN, VERMONT.” The tri-foil hands are well formed and are counter-weighted.

The weight-driven movement is brass and of good quality. The weight is cast iron and is original to this clock. The front plate is stamped Maker’s name, working location, “F79” and FAIR HAVEN / MFG. CO. / Fair Haven / VT. U.S.A.” The pendulum hangs from a bridge at the top of the front plate. The pendulum rod is made of wood. The bob is zinc, covered with a brass facing. The motion of this pendulum bob can be viewed through the glass tablet in the lower section of this clock.

This nicely restored example was made circa 1890.
