A Waterbury Minature Box Regulator with Calumet advertising on the door glass. 224056.
This “Miniature Box Regulator” was made by the Waterbury Clock Company of Waterbury, Connecticut. This is a miniature version of a box regulator, which is a common form. The standard box clock is approximately 36 inches long. This scaled-down example is only 19.5 inches long, 9.5 inches wide, and 4.5 inches deep. This version also features advertising on the glass for Calumet Baking Powders. It is often said that this company had these clocks made so that they could give them to the retailers of their products. I am familiar with numerous stories about these clocks being seen in or coming out of smaller grocery stores. Calumet was one of the larger suppliers of advertising items at the time.
This model is constructed in solid oak. The decorative designs are pressed into the wood under tremendous pressure. The front panel is glass, and the advertising is applied to the back of the glass. It reads, “TIME TO BUY / CALUMET / BAKING / POEDWER / “Best by Test.”
The paper dial measures 5 inches across and is applied to a zinc pan. It is original to the clock. The Maker’s name is printed at the bottom of the dial. The hours are presented in Roman-style numeral format along a closed minute ring.
The spring-driven movement is constructed in brass and is designed to run 8 days on a full wind. The front plate of this movement is die-stamped by the manufacturer. It is a time-and-strike design, striking the hour on a coil gong mounted on the backboard inside the case. The decorative pendulum hangs below the dial.
